63. Are there any vitamins or supplements stroke survivors should take?
Dr. Chiu: There’s not a lot of evidence suggesting that stroke survivors should be taking specific vitamins or supplements, but a general one-a-day multivitamin that contains B vitamins including folic acid may very well be beneficial. There is now a fairly strong and established link between folic acid deficiency and an increased risk of stroke.
I don’t recommend any of the other supplements marketed for brain health. We don’t always know what is contained in those supplements, and it’s very hard for medical professionals to recommend things when we don’t know what’s in them or what complications they might create.
